Vegetable-tanned leather is known for its firm and durable texture. In Taiwan's early days, before plastic products were prevalent, vegetable-tanned cowhide was used in many items, such as the leather belts that powered early sewing machines, bicycle saddles, farming tools, and military accessories. https://www.dozi.com.tw/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/websiteimg-0007.jpg A characteristic of vegetable-tanned leather is that its color deepens over time due to the interaction of the tannins within the leather with air and sunlight. The surface color gradually darkens. Coupled with the natural oils from your hands and the friction from daily use, it develops a lustrous patina. This allows leather goods made from vegetable-tanned leather to evolve uniquely with time and user habits. We believe these changes are a testament to the shared history between the user and the leather. Leather is merely a byproduct of the livestock industry. Therefore, farmers do not focus on protecting the cattle's skin. Consequently, during their lives, cattle may experience insect bites, scratches, or puncture wounds. Free-roaming cattle might also bear branding marks, and as they grow, their skin develops natural lines and wrinkles. In cases of difficult births for cows, there may be surgical marks from C-sections. When the cattle are large enough for slaughter, knife marks from the skinning process can also occur. These marks are faithfully preserved on the leather when it is processed, serving as proof of the animal's life journey. They often send their leather to processing plants for surface sanding and subsequent spraying. While this results in a clean surface, it loses the natural character. At DOZI Leather Workshop, we do not intentionally avoid using these natural markings from the cow's life, unless they are excessively large. The resulting lettering appears as a charred black mark. Therefore, this service cannot be used on dark-colored leathers such as black, dark blue, etc. ▴ Some products require laser engraving before production. For ready-made items, laser engraving cannot be applied. Therefore, you will need to be placed in a queue for separate production. Please contact customer service beforehand to inquire about production timelines when selecting this service. 🌞 Care and Maintenance -------------------- Frequent use is the best form of maintenance. It is advisable to avoid storing leather in humid environments. If the leather accidentally gets wet during use, wipe it immediately with a dry cloth and allow it to air dry in a cool, well-ventilated area. Do not expose it to direct sunlight, as this can cause the leather to harden and deteriorate. Once dry, you can apply leather conditioning oil to replenish the leather's oils. You may also spray a waterproofing agent onto the leather surface to protect it from accidental spills. If the leather item needs to be stored or will not be used for an extended period, it can be placed in a dehumidifying cabinet with humidity controlled between 50% and 60% to prevent mold. Alternatively, a sealed bag with a desiccant can achieve the same effect. After one year, free leather maintenance will still be provided, and a partial labor fee will be charged for repairs. 5. The leather materials selected by the studio favor natural qualities. Cowhide is not excessively processed or coated with heavy surface finishes. As a result, there may be slight variations in color, texture, and minor scratches. If you require a perfectly flawless leather surface, it may be difficult to accommodate your request. Therefore, we do not accept requests for "flawless leather surfaces." Additionally, once customization (such as engraving or laser etching) has been applied, returns will not be accepted unless there was a production error.
