The graduated coffee mugs are part of a collaboration between MoMA and the School of Visual Arts' MFA Design Products program, and are playful, decorative, and functional. The cup features capacity markings for espresso, macchiato, cortado, café au vin, americano, flat white and cappuccino. “One of my favourite quotes is from the late British magician SH Sharpe: ‘Magicians should sharpen one’s sensitivity to the miraculous,’” says Corn, who has a background in performing magic. “I realised I could bring that element of wonder into my design work, too. Multi-ccino is the result of exploring my own curiosity about people’s coffee preferences – I’ve always been amazed at how many coffee drinks there are on café menus. From there I realised it would be fun to put all the types of coffee in one cup.” The MoMA Design Store has been working with students in the School of Visual Arts’ MFA Products of Design program. The MoMA Design Store invites Products of Design students to pitch their ideas and prototype them under the guidance of MoMA mentors, who decide which products to make during a year-long exchange with the students. As MoMA’s only design collaboration with an academic institution, one of the greatest benefits of the collaboration for the museum is being involved in the early stages of the design process. “The conversations we have with students are invaluable,” said Chay Costello, MoMA’s associate director of merchandising. “We often challenge each other’s assumptions about design and its role in our daily lives.” The Products of Design collaboration is dedicated to the study and pursuit of contemporary needs and the problem-solving power of design.
