《Freehand Embroidery》
Most of the embroidery on Pangandaran bags is done using a "freehand embroidery machine."
We often get asked, "How is freehand embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery is automated; the machine reads the design and stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical pieces.
In contrast, freehand embroidery is a craft where the artisan manually moves the fabric as they stitch the design.
Because it's human-made, each piece has its own unique character. No two embroidered pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand-embroidery. It's an incredible skill that involves transferring the sketch to the fabric and meticulously stitching while following the up-and-down movement of the needle, all while referencing the original artwork.
In Vietnam, there are currently just over 400 people who can perform freehand embroidery. However, only about 50 of them can do it professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of the embroidery certification. Among these, merely 10 individuals possess the skill to execute the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. But being skilled isn't enough; embroidery also requires artistic sensibility. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression.
This is why we entrust our embroidery to Hun, a master artisan. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been practicing this craft since the age of 15, making him a veteran of 31 years. Moreover, he possesses an exceptional sense of design. We have complete faith in his abilities.
With Vietnam's recent economic development, traditional crafts, like many others, face challenging times. Since 2000, the number of freehand embroidery artisans has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools for this craft, it is now primarily taught through apprenticeships with seasoned artisans.
Hun has trained four apprentices, but he notes that there are no young people capable of mastering this technique today. Due to rapid economic growth, manual crafts are being left behind, and the number of artisans is expected to decrease further. This trend is accelerating even faster than in Japan, and the national system offers little protection, placing Vietnamese freehand embroidery on the brink of disappearing within the next decade or so.
In the video, we feature the highly skilled artisan Hun, who created the "Sudden Rain" embroidery.
Witness the beauty of embroidery brought to life with exceptional technique.
