Echinocactus texensis, belonging to the Cactaceae family and the Echinocactus genus, originates from regions spanning from Southern Texas in the USA to Mexico. It's a beautiful and accessible large cactus with robust spines. Echinocactus texensis is considered a very resilient and easy-to-care-for variety, thriving even in Taiwan's hot and humid climate when grown outdoors. However, to maintain clean skin and vibrant spine coloration, most sellers opt for greenhouse cultivation. The genus name 'Echino' comes from the Greek word for hedgehog or porcupine, indicating that cacti in this genus typically feature large areoles and formidable spines.
Echinocactus texensis blooms, with flowering usually occurring in spring or late spring. The flowers are impressively large, reaching up to 10 cm in diameter, and are typically pink or rosy-red. Beyond its beautiful flowers, the spines of Echinocactus texensis are truly a sight to behold! Its spines and areoles display a captivating variety, offering a wonderful way to de-stress from daily life. The large, wide, and hard spines of Echinocactus texensis can be hazardous to horses, hence its common name, "Horse Crippler Cactus." The reddish-gray spines are tough, with the lower spines being particularly wide, thick, and long, featuring a distinct ringed structure that makes them exceptionally unique.
Light
Full sun to bright light conditions are ideal for the growth of Echinocactus texensis. Insufficient light can lead to weak spines, and in severe cases, the plant may weaken and eventually perish. Therefore, for a robust and attractive plant, it's best to place it in a sunny location! Ensure good ventilation in the growing environment to prevent stuffiness, which can harm the plant.
Watering
During spring, summer, and autumn, which is the growing season, water thoroughly. Water approximately every 7-10 days. In winter, reduce watering or cease watering altogether, aiming for about 10-14 days between waterings. The fundamental principle is "water only when dry, and water thoroughly when you do." Cacti are generally very drought and sun-tolerant. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so a well-draining, loose medium is essential.
Succulents and cacti are influenced by moisture and light, and watering frequency will vary with the environment and climate. Generally, watering once a week is sufficient.
Fertilizer
During the growing season in spring, summer, and autumn, you can add a moderate amount of general-purpose organic granular slow-release fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing during high temperatures and in winter. Be careful not to splash the plant with fertilizer or water. The designer has already incorporated a suitable amount of slow-release fertilizer in the potting mix, so you don't need to worry about it!
📝 Key Care Points: Drought-tolerant, loves sunshine, needs ample light, water thoroughly when dry, water approximately every 7-10 days in summer, and every 10-14 days in winter.
