Author: Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (1712~1774)/ Franz Rechberger (1771~1841) Name: [Landscape with ruins] Signed: Dietricy 1757. Technique: etching. Time: the beginning of the nineteenth century. Size: Screen 15.8 x 24/Paper surface 23.5 x 31.5 cm. Remarks: with double-layer cardboard mounting (without frame) Number: P K-053 Introduction of works: Among the German artists of the eighteenth century, Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (1712~1774) cannot be regarded as an original one. However, his artistic career has been smooth sailing. His father was a court painter, his mother was also the daughter of a court painter, and his two sisters later became painters. It can be seen that the professional hereditary tradition at that time. After coming to Drestown from Weimar in 1724, he studied with the landscape painter Johann Alexander Thiele (1685 – 1752). At the age of eighteen, the Holy Roman Elector of Saxony and the Polish King August II (Friedrich August I der Starke, 1677-1733) noticed the artist’s talent and began to sponsor him and allow him to travel around Italy And cities all over the Netherlands. As a result, Dietrich was able to personally admire the works of past masters, and copied many works with his outstanding talents. In 1741, August III. von Polen (1696 – 1763) appointed him as court painter, and he has shined ever since. His works are sold all over Europe, and he has also been awarded the Academy Medal of Augsburg, Bologna and Kobengen. In 1764, he became the principal of the Maison Ceramic Kiln Painting School, and a year later, he also became a professor at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. Dietrich had solid skills and was familiar with various subjects. He also understood Dutch and Italian painting schools, and was able to master the Rococo style popular at the time. He analyzed Rembrandt's works in depth, and in terms of style, it is even difficult to distinguish the authenticity from the fake. His most admired landscape etchings were his landscape etchings, and he was even praised by the well-known art historian Winckelmann (Johann Joachim Winckelmann, 1717~1768) as "the Raphael of landscape painting." This kind of realistic landscape To further influence the subsequent generations, his student Klengel (Johann Christian Klengel, 1751 ~ 1824) is one of the representatives. From today’s approximately one hundred and eighty handed down prints, we can find that Dietrich’s mastery of themes is very diverse, from biblical images, myths and fables, landscapes, animals, heraldry, books, floral illustrations, portraits, and customs. Subject matter etc. The most prominent of these is his landscape works, which are of the style of Dutch and Italian masters in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Now this [Landscape with Ruins] is not his original engraving, but a re-engraved draft of his sketch by the Austrian artist and printmaker Franz Rechberger (1771~1841). This Rechberg is one of the heirs of Dietrich's tradition of landscape etching. He re-engraved several sets of Dietrich's sketches, and it can be said that he is familiar with the brushwork and style of this predecessor. In this etching work, Rechberg uses thicker lines to restore Dietrich's sketch strokes, and the picture appears three-dimensional and profound. Rechberg's specialization in etchings allowed him to dominate the collection of the then-famous Earl of Fries (Joseph Johann, Graf von Fries, 1765~1788), and later became the leader in the art collection of prints, Aberdeen, Vienna Curator of the Wien Graphische Sammlung Albertina (Wien Graphische Sammlung Albertina). Such a re-engraved engraving work brought together the profound engraving heritage of the German and Austrian region at that time. During the Romantic period, the engraving in this area developed rapidly, which can be said to be based on this foundation. *If you have any detailed questions, please send an email to contact the designer *The merchandisers of this design hall are mainly Western antiques, old jewellery and home accessories, and old European original prints.
