It is also known as the round-eared elephant due to its more rounded ears. Compared to the common African elephant, the forest elephant is much smaller in size with longer front legs. Its tusks are also straighter to avoid getting caught on vegetation in the forest. Like all its relatives, the African forest elephant suffers greatly from ivory poaching, and the development of pristine rainforests continually destroys its habitat. Worse still, the forest elephant has a very low reproductive rate, with females only showing signs of giving birth at age 23 and then producing offspring approximately every five years.
