Anyone who has seen the animated movie "Shrek" will immediately recognize how much this succulent resembles Shrek's ears – the comparison is truly fitting!
Gollum Jade, a succulent from the Crassula genus in the Crassulaceae family, is also known as the Money Tree. It's a unique variant with twisted, tubular leaves, hence its name "Gollum Jade." Due to its cross-section resembling a horseshoe, it's also called "Horseshoe Horn." When exposed to sunlight, the leaves turn reddish, earning it the name "Horseshoe Red." Nowadays, however, the name "Money Tree" has become even more popular.
Native to South Africa, Gollum Jade is a perennial herbaceous plant with fleshy, rounded stems. The plant branches profusely, forming a shrub-like structure. Its leaves are arranged alternately on the stem or clustered at the tips, and are fleshy and tubular, with a glossy, fresh green color. The tips of the leaves are obliquely cut into an oval shape with a central indentation. In cold weather, the edges of the cut surface develop a beautiful purplish-red hue.
Sunlight
When Gollum Jade receives ample sunlight, its leaf color is more vibrant (the cut ends turn red), and the plant's form is more compact. Insufficient sunlight causes the leaves to turn light green, and the plant becomes looser and elongated, diminishing its ornamental appeal.
It thrives in warm, dry environments with plenty of sunlight. It is drought-tolerant but not cold-hardy, so it should be moved indoors during winter. Except for avoiding intense sun exposure during the peak heat of summer, it should receive sufficient sunlight in other seasons.
Propagation
Propagation is primarily done through cuttings. Gollum Jade does not go dormant in the summer, and mature, healthy leaves or fleshy stems can be used for cuttings. After cutting the leaves, wait a few days for them to dry before inserting them into the medium. Roots will typically form within 2-3 weeks, and they are easy to establish.
Watering and Soil
It prefers well-draining media. A loose, breathable, slightly acidic soil mixture, such as leaf mold or peat moss, is ideal. Avoid using alkaline soil for cultivation!
It is drought-tolerant and dislikes waterlogged conditions. Water thoroughly when the medium is completely dry. Water approximately every three to five days. Avoid water accumulation. The watering frequency should be adjusted based on your specific growing environment.
Fertilization
Fertilize sparingly. Once a month is sufficient, using a diluted liquid fertilizer or slow-release fertilizer. The designer's potting mix already contains an appropriate amount of slow-release granular fertilizer, so you don't need to worry about it!
📝 Key Care Tips: Prefers warm, dry conditions with ample sunlight. Drought-tolerant but not cold-hardy. Requires well-draining soil. Water thoroughly when dry, approximately once every three to five days.
