Lanyu Marine Debris Buoy: Totem-Inspired Humpback Whale Painted Buoy A collaborative creation by <Little Island Art Class> and <Marine Debris Small Store> Lanyu is a volcanic island, predominantly characterized by rocky shores with limited sandy beaches. Consequently, marine debris carried by ocean currents often becomes entangled in the reef areas. For over a decade, since we began beach cleanups with our island partners in 2012, we've not only collected marine debris along the coastlines of various tribal communities, sorting it into recyclable and non-recyclable categories. In recent years, we've specifically set aside usable fishing buoys from the waste piles, cleaning and classifying them. Our hope is to alleviate the burden on the island's already saturated landfill, while also giving marine debris a new life through regeneration and creative reuse. Each marine debris buoy has journeyed across the sea, carried by the Kuroshio Current and other ocean flows, arriving at our small island from diverse regions (such as South Korea, China, Japan, etc. – if you look closely, you can actually see different languages printed on each buoy). Due to the varied materials and sizes of the buoys, and the meticulous hand-painted details, every painted marine debris buoy is truly one-of-a-kind.
