Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851)— a master of Romantic landscape painting, celebrated as the "painter of light."

In 1666, scientist Isaac Newton discovered that sunlight refracted through a prism could reveal a spectrum of colors, leading artists to understand that white light is composed of various colored lights. In 1801, British scholar Thomas Young pioneered research into human perception of color, proposing that by selecting three primary light colors with significant separation and combining them in varying proportions, nearly any color could be produced.
Turner infused his landscape paintings with personal interpretations, making the depiction of light, air, and water his forte. This individualized approach to landscape ultimately influenced Claude Monet, the "father of Impressionism," inspiring his iconic "Impression, Sunrise." Turner's art not only redefined landscape painting but also laid a crucial foundation for the development of Post-Impressionism.
---------
Turner's prodigious talent was recognized early in the art world, providing him with the financial stability to fully express his unique style. In "A Pictorial History of Art," David Piper described his later works as "mysterious marvels," while critic John Ruskin praised his ability to "terribly and truthfully express the pulse of Nature."
Turner was drawn to depicting natural phenomena and cataclysms: fires, shipwrecks, sunlight, storms, heavy rain, and fog. He was captivated by the power of the sea. While he included figures, they served primarily to accentuate the sublime and wild grandeur of nature, which humans could not conquer, and to attest to the power of the divine. Consequently, his later works increasingly focused on light on water, skies, and fire, gradually moving away from literal representation and paving the way for Impressionist theory.
His early works employed more traditional techniques. However, in his later period, he applied watercolor techniques to oil painting, capturing the ephemeral effects of light and atmosphere. It is said he once had himself tied to the mast of a ship in a storm to experience a tempest firsthand.
In his final years, his oil paintings became more transparent, using thin layers of color to express pure light effects. In works like "Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway," the outlines of objects are almost indistinguishable, with intense tones and fleeting light creating a powerful effect. This not only placed Turner at the forefront of British painters but also significantly influenced later French Impressionists, particularly Monet, who studied his techniques in considerable detail. In 1816, a year of poor summer weather, exceptionally brilliant sunsets inspired some of his works.
