Cheetahs have been revered as pets symbolizing wealth and status since ancient times, making them highly favored by royalty in the Middle East and India. As cheetahs are extremely particular about their environment, captive breeding has been notoriously difficult. Historically, it was common to capture young cheetahs from the wild for domestication, leading to a high mortality rate among cubs unable to adapt. The reliance on wild capture for cheetah domestication, coupled with continuous hunting for their pelts, created a vicious cycle that drastically reduced the population of the Asiatic cheetah. The last sighting of an Asiatic cheetah in the wild was in Southern India in 1948, after which scholars presumed it to be extinct. Decades later, to the surprise of many, Asiatic cheetahs were rediscovered in the highlands of Iran.
