In color theory, harmony can be broadly categorized into analogous harmony and complementary harmony. Analogous harmonies have long been explored and applied by humankind. While exemplary cases of complementary harmonies exist, their application is notably less prevalent than analogous harmonies. After dedicating its early years to the foundational knowledge of dyes and the restoration of tie-dye techniques, the Tian Dye Workshop has, for the past two decades, focused on the application and promotion of color aesthetics. This series primarily seeks to explore the less-discussed realms of dyeing by applying color contrasts. The aim is to discover perfect color pairings from everyday, readily available natural dyes. We aim not only to showcase the harmonious properties of colors but also to present the interplay of area ratios and saturation variations between two hues. Although our individual pieces feature minimalist color palettes, they achieve a delicate beauty through the extension of two gradient color schemes. The inherent contrast between these two colors is resolved into a high degree of harmony by gradually lightening the tones and employing transitional lighter shades. The dyeing technique employed is two-tone gradient dyeing, a type of dip-dyeing. To achieve uniformity and subtle transitions, the artisan requires over five years of professional training. This involves meticulously adjusting the concentrations of dye baths and mordants, as well as varying the immersion times for mordanting and dyeing, all to create beautifully smooth gradient effects. Natural pigments are influenced by growing seasons, climate, soil quality, and sunlight. Coupled with variations inherent in handmade dyeing processes, slight color discrepancies are unavoidable. Each batch may not replicate the original appearance precisely, but our dyers will carefully adjust colors based on their aesthetic expertise.
