Kawase Hasui (May 18, 1883 – November 7, 1957) was a Japanese artist, widely acclaimed as one of the most important and prolific printmakers of 20th-century Japan. He was a prominent designer in the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement, whose artists focused on traditional subjects but adopted styles influenced by yōga (Western-style painting). Similar to earlier Ukiyo-e prints, Hasui's work predominantly features landscapes, but his depictions emphasize atmospheric effects and the rendering of natural light and shadow. Throughout his nearly forty-year career, he designed close to a thousand woodblock prints.
