It is the largest among marine shells, with a diameter that can reach 1.8 meters. The name "champlage" originated in the Han Dynasty, derived from the radiating grooves on its shell's surface, which resembled ancient chariot tracks, hence the name "chequ." Later generations added the character for stone due to its hardness. Champlage, along with pearls, coral, and amber, is celebrated as one of the four great organic gemstones in the West. In Chinese Buddhism, it is revered as one of the Seven Treasures, alongside gold, silver, colored glaze, agate, pearls, and amber.
