It is the largest among marine shells, capable of reaching diameters up to 1.8 meters. The name "Tridacna" originated in the Han Dynasty, deriving from the radiating grooves on its outer shell that resemble ancient chariot tracks, hence "Che Qu" (车渠). Later generations added the character for stone due to its hardness. Tridacna, along with pearl, coral, and amber, is celebrated as one of the four great organic gemstones in the West.
