Historically, the deer’s beautiful hide tragically led to rampant poaching. During the Japanese colonial era, herds could still be found near water sources in areas like Jingmei, Muzha, and Wulai. However, after 1969, habitat destruction and extensive human hunting caused a significant decline in Taiwan's Sika Deer population.
