About Gourds:
In traditional Chinese practices for warding off misfortune and inviting good fortune, the "Gourd" is revered as a precious artifact possessing mystical powers to subdue spirits, ward off evil, avert calamities, attract wealth, absorb negative energies, and neutralize harmful influences. Legends tell of the Eight Immortals, such as 'Li Tieguai', and the Divine Woman of Nine Heavens who used gourds to save the people. In Buddhist scriptures, the Medicine Buddha holds a medicinal gourd filled with elixirs to heal the world's ailments.
In Chinese culture, the gourd symbolizes "Fu Lu" (fortune and prosperity). It not only repels evil but also brings good fortune and wealth into the home, leading many families to acquire gourd ornaments, pendants, or keychains to attract good luck.
About Lightning-Struck Wood:
For those with sensitive energy fields or spiritual awareness, lightning-struck wood can feel like a comfortable, flowing electric current throughout the body, without any discomfort. However, entities of an impure nature tend to dislike its energy (the reasons are explained below).
Lightning-struck wood, also known as "Evil-Repelling Wood," is considered a supreme divine wood in Taoist practices.
The ancient text "Wan Fa Gui Zong" lists it as the foremost sacred wood for crafting ritual implements.
Why is wood struck by lightning so highly regarded? It is likely connected to deities who control lightning, such as the Lord of Thunder and the Mistress of Lightning. Expert scholarly articles, such as "Research on the Lord of Thunder and Mistress of Lightning," delve into this. The Lord of Thunder is a deity of justice; he strikes down evildoers or malevolent spirits who defy heavenly laws, not those who do good deeds. This is documented in the "Song History" under the "Law of the Lord of Thunder's Smiting." This indicates that the Lord of Thunder's strikes are not merely based on physical electrical discharge but follow a set of rules. This principle is widely known, leading people to curse wrongdoers by saying, "May heaven strike him with lightning!"
Ancient peoples, in their interaction with nature, gradually recognized the potent energy imbued in wood struck by lightning. This energy could expel evil, promote good over evil, and maximize spiritual power. Consequently, lightning-struck wood has been secretly sought after by practitioners since ancient times to harness its spiritual power and enhance their abilities. Wearing it not only protects against the intrusion of evil energies but also brings auspiciousness and good fortune, which is why ancient people treasured it as a valuable possession.
I. Identifying Lightning-Struck Wood
1. Visual Inspection for Scorching:
Look for signs of being struck by lightning. Typically, wood struck by lightning will have broken branches and scorched marks from the impact.
2. Energy Sensing:
Any wood struck by lightning possesses electrical energy. After obtaining the wood, one can use touch, pulse perception, or other sensory abilities to detect if electrical energy is being emitted. Lightning-struck wood emanates energy that can be sensed, often manifesting as warmth, tingling, or swelling in sensitive body parts.
3. Identifying Lightning Patterns (Lei Wen):
Wood struck by lightning exhibits distinct "lightning patterns." Identifying these patterns is challenging and usually requires guidance from experienced artisans. Most individuals find it difficult to discern them.
The three methods above should be used in conjunction. Relying solely on bodily sensation to determine if wood is struck by lightning is highly misleading. Someone proficient in energy cultivation can project their internal energy into any object, causing it to generate sensations of heat, tingling, or swelling, making it impossible to definitively conclude whether it's due to a lightning strike or energy projection. Therefore, correctly identifying genuine lightning-struck wood requires combining the above methods, not just relying on sensory perception.
Lightning-struck wood is used in crafting ritual implements for summoning rain, controlling the three realms, summoning spirits, vanquishing demons, dispatching celestial officers, purifying souls, sending off wandering spirits, imprinting talismans, protecting residences, treating illnesses, and eradicating epidemics.
Legend has it that among the common folk in Northeast China, lightning-struck wood is widely believed to be struck by heavenly lightning, which ghosts deeply fear. It is considered the most potent artifact for repelling evil. The lingering information from the Lord of Thunder and Mistress of Lightning's suppression of spiritual entities on the wood exerts a powerful deterrent effect on spirits, making it a protective item for homes. Even some shamanistic deities fear lightning-struck wood, as shamans often have "attached spirits" that are typically vengeful souls, wild ghosts, or lower-level spirits such as foxes, snakes, and weasels.
The common people further believe that trees felled by lightning possess protective properties. It is thought that lightning has already driven away ghosts and demons from the tree, so other malevolent entities dare not approach it. Consequently, in Northeast China, people often string a piece of lightning-struck wood onto a rope and wear it on children's wrists or necks, believing this prevents them from being "possessed" by spirits.
