The Lore of Magatama and Izumo-style Magatama Magatama appeared in Japan as early as the Kofun period, over 5000 years ago. The Izumo-style magatama originated in the Yayoi period, 2600 years ago. The Izumo-style magatama was discontinued during the Heian period. After 900 years of obscurity, during the Edo period, Ito Senyū of the Izumo region learned and inherited the techniques and knowledge, leading to the revival and continued tradition of the Izumo-style magatama. The Izumo style possesses a unique gentle, rounded, and balanced form, reflecting the pursuit of shape and aesthetics of the time.
