Material Selection The cowhide used by "Cut Line School" is all Grade A, high-oil, vegetable-tanned leather from Italy. As it is a natural material, and the tannery uses a vegetable-tanning process that causes minimal damage to the leather, the surface may inevitably have minor "scars," "wrinkles," or "veins." We do our best to avoid these during cutting or place them on less visible or non-stressed areas of the product. 2. Pure Hand Stitching Our products are not made with sewing machines; all stitching is done by hand. Before stitching, special pricking irons are used to create the stitch holes in the leather, which is how we achieve the beautiful wave-like stitch pattern, distinct from machine stitching. While this significantly increases production time, it is a crucial step where the leather artisan imbues the piece with soul and a warm, tactile feel. 3. Hand-Burnished Edges Before finishing, the leather edges are burnished and sealed. This is done to ensure the edges appear smooth, rounded, and natural. "Cut Line School" has its own unique edge-finishing method. First, sandpaper is used to repeatedly smooth any sharp edges. Then, an edge sealant is applied to create a flat surface, repeated 2-3 times. Finally, an edge wax is applied, and a burnishing tool is used to rub the edges repeatedly until they achieve a smooth finish. 4. Hand-Dyed Leather For our hand-dyed products, "Cut Line School" currently uses imported Fiebing's leather alcohol dyes from the United States. To achieve even and natural coloration, we first dampen the leather surface with water. Then, we apply the dye repeatedly with a sponge, gradually deepening the shade until the desired color is reached. After drying, a color sealant is applied to enhance colorfastness. We also apply water to the leather surface to remove any dust and further even out the color. As the dyeing is purely by hand, there are subtle variations in color between each bag, making every piece unique.
