Made from sugi (Japanese cedar) branches and leaves formed into a sphere, it is hung under the eaves of sake breweries. It serves as both a shop sign and a symbol of prayer for successful brewing and the renewal of sake. As the seasons change and new sake is brewed, the color of the Sugidama gradually shifts from fresh green to brownish-red, mirroring the rhythm of sake maturation and allowing passersby to perceive the birth and maturity of new sake at a glance. The origin of Sugidama is often linked to Shinto beliefs in Nara, rumored to stem from shrines dedicated to the sake deity and reverence for sacred mountain trees. Thus, sugi leaves were bundled into spheres and hung in front of shops as a marker for "Sakabayashi."
