Echinopsis chamaecereus, commonly known as the Peanut Cactus or Thimble Cactus, is a variety of Echinopsis multiplex, also called "Ruyi Yu," "Grass Ball," or "Short-Haired Ball." Originating from South America, its spherical stem can reach over ten centimeters. The stem features more than ten distinct vertical ribs, each lined with spines. This cactus typically blooms at night, with flowers emerging from a long, trumpet-like base, reaching up to twenty centimeters in length. The flowers are stunning, resembling those of the Epiphyllum. The primary growing season for Echinopsis is summer, which is also its peak blooming period. The flowers do not last long, opening around 6-7 PM and wilting by noon the following day. The blooms are large, pure white, and elegantly simple, emitting a pleasant fragrance – a rare trait among many Echinopsis species. Its upright posture gives it a distinguished air, earning it the nickname "Queen of the Night" in Western countries. If the tip of your short-haired ball cactus appears slightly greenish, it indicates insufficient light during cultivation. In such cases, relocating it to a sunnier spot is advisable to prevent etiolation and misshapen growth. Short-haired ball cacti are exceptionally resilient. With controlled watering and overwintering indoors, they typically survive. The main body readily produces offsets, which can be easily detached and placed on soil to propagate. 【Habits】 Echinopsis chamaecereus thrives in warm, sunny environments. It is drought-tolerant but not cold-hardy. It requires shade in the summer and ample sunlight in the winter, with an optimal temperature range of 18-30°C. 【Watering】 Avoid watering immediately after repotting. Mist the plant 2-3 times daily for the first half month, then water sparingly. After new roots develop in about a month, gradually increase the watering amount. Follow the principle of "water thoroughly when dry." Water only when the soil surface is dry, ensuring appropriate amounts and strictly avoiding waterlogged conditions in the pot. 【Fertilizing】 During the growing season, fertilize once a month with a succulent nutrient solution.
