In the 1970s, during the Bangladesh Liberation War, over a million refugees who had lost their homes and livelihoods gathered in refugee camps in Syedpur. The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a non-profit organization providing food and relief, recognized the need for employment in the area and trained 150 women in screen printing, jute bag sewing, and other crafts. Thus, in 1976, "Action Bags," a small workshop primarily producing bags, and "Eastern Screen Printers," a small workshop focused on screen printing, were established. They produce bags using jute (a type of hemp) native to Bangladesh, which are then hand screen-printed by their sister company, Eastern Screen Printers, using safe and environmentally friendly dyes. Currently, Syedpur Enterprises employs over 70 women. Josna, abandoned by her husband 10 years ago, began working at Saidpur Enterprises. What difference has fair trade made? "As a domestic worker, my income was only half of what I earn at Saidpur Enterprises. There were no other jobs in the area. At Saidpur Enterprises, I am respected, and my schedule is flexible.
