Unsōdō was founded in 1891 as a publisher specializing in art books using the woodblock printing technique. The company name was bestowed by the renowned literati painter Gōfuku Tessai, who inscribed the characters "芸, 香草也" (Gei, kaori aru kusa nari), meaning "Artemisia, an aromatic herb." "Unsō" refers to the perennial herb of the Rutaceae family, known in Chinese as "yún xiāng" (芸香). The simplified Chinese character "芸" (yún) is a homophone for "art" (藝). In 1918, the Tokyo branch was established, focusing on publishing pattern reference books and photo collections for kimono accessories and crafts, as well as producing woodblock prints for appreciation. Today, only a handful of woodblock printing publishers remain in Kyoto and Tokyo. Among them, Unsōdō is the sole publisher in Japan that issues hand-pulled woodblock prints and Japanese-style bound books, and continues to produce reproductions of many classic works. *Product image colors may vary slightly due to differences in computer screen settings.
