Shuifei Sand, Emperor Sand, Zijin Sand, and Crystal Sand are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**.
**"Shuifei Sand"**
**A true red, with a slight orange hue. Its surface has a warm, matte luster that will become brighter with wear, forming a patina over time.**
The production method involves repeatedly grinding cinnabar into fine particles to form a paste, mixing it with water, allowing it to settle, and then collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This is followed by further settling and precipitation (the water-milling purification method). The cinnabar mud at the bottom is then air-dried and compressed using traditional methods. Even on a cross-section, uniform, fine mineral flecks can be observed.
**"Emperor Sand"**
**A brighter, more vibrant red with higher hardness.**
The production method involves multiple stages of purification from natural cinnabar ore, including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-milling/high polishing**, before being compressed using traditional methods. Emperor Sand has almost no visible mineral flecks on the surface, but has them internally. The surface features a **high-polishing** process, giving it a metallic sheen, especially under sunlight, which enhances its metallic luster.
**"Zijin Sand"**
**A purplish-red color with slightly lower hardness than Emperor Sand.**
The production method involves multiple stages from natural cinnabar ore, such as **crushing/grinding/screening**, but **without water-milling purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as fine and has small, scattered mineral flecks, creating a "starry sky" effect.
**"Crystal Sand"**
**A purplish-red color that is translucent.**
These are large cinnabar particles directly chipped from cinnabar ore. Large crystal grains are clearly visible on the surface. Under light, each particle is transparent, emitting a fluorescent red glow.

**> Cinnabar**
The earliest written records refer to cinnabar with a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is an ideogram. In ancient times, miners would excavate pits, and from these pits, they would extract minerals. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying the extraction of something from a mine. This "something" is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, cinnabar came to be called "朱砂" (zhūshā), where "丹" and "朱" describe the color, and "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregularly shaped mineral particles.
The color of cinnabar is exceptionally enduring. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is an indispensable component in pigments and is the main ingredient in "Eight Treasures Seal Paste."
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that have absorbed the essence of the sun and moon, gathering the pure energy of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a strong positive energy magnetic field. You may notice that jade feels cool to the touch, while cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in Taoist rituals for drawing talismans, consecration, warding off evil, and suppressing malevolent influences. Cinnabar has always been regarded as an ultimate item for attracting good fortune, transforming luck, suppressing evil, and inviting wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of great fortune, prosperity, and well-being.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior herbal medicine, frequently used in treatments for its properties to calm the spirit, detoxify, and alleviate insomnia and excessive dreaming.
Living in the modern era, owning one or two cinnabar pieces can also cultivate one's character, soothe the eyes, and calm the heart.
**> Identification**
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar with a strong sense of weight. You can use the following methods for identification:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat it indirectly. It is generally not recommended to directly burn finished products, as controlling the time and area can be difficult. If it turns black after prolonged heating, it cannot be restored.)
>. True cinnabar can draw orangish-red lines on paper. (To avoid damaging the aesthetic of the finished product, please choose an inconspicuous area for drawing the line, or use the complimentary bead provided.)
**> Care**
1. Avoid corrosion.
Cinnabar is a mineral and is insoluble in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can cause corrosion.
2. Avoid contact with metal objects.
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling or blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid high temperatures.
The mercuric sulfide component in cinnabar only releases at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as cinnabar jewelry is kept away from high-temperature environments, it can be worn with peace of mind.
4. Avoid collision with hard or sharp objects.
Cinnabar has a high hardness but is brittle in texture; handle with care to prevent drops.
5. How to clean.
If you find the cinnabar is dirty, do not soak it in water, as this will alter its original luster! You can gently wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and let it air dry.
6. Oil polishing method.
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the stone surface to absorb the oil. This will make it more lustrous and clear. After applying oil, seal it in a brocade box, perhaps wrapped in plastic film to prevent the oil from staining the brocade lining.
7. Frequent handling.
Frequently handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your person with your hands. This allows a very thin layer of oil to adhere to the stone surface, making it appear more ancient and elegant over time.
The actual item is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
