The good old day-Yue man square

The Kwun Tong (Yu Man Square) Redevelopment Project in Hong Kong was officially launched in 2007. It is a large-scale urban renewal project that lasted for more than ten years. After reconstruction, it has become a place with high-end residences, hotels, office buildings and large shopping malls. Before the reconstruction, Yu Man Square was a simple yet diversified place, which gave birth to a unique culture formed by the grassroots life. The photographer had lived in Kwun Tong for more than 20 years. One day, he saw all the familiar streets and shops were gradually being closed off, so he took his camera to record the moment. The whole book is made of Sun Parch paper, which is a kind of thin and soft paper, with each individual page combined with two sheets and forming a cylinder structure. When turning from one page to another, it feels light and airy as if hiding a kind of vitality. The photos of the streets are printed full-page, and the photos of small shops and residents' life are smaller. When flipping through the book, it is like walking along the streets and discovering the neighborhood. In the first part of the book, photos are printed in black, with some orange-yellow gradation occasionally appears like the light leaks and fades of film. Then, photos are printed in white color on black paper. It is a part of reflection. Photos taken after redevelopment are printed in color. From the color arrangement of the photos, we divide the book into three parts -memory, reflection and present. Last but not least, we chose Risograph printing for this book. It is a relatively unstable printing method with coarse dots that would create shifting of images and uneven coloring in prints. Due to its instability, it gives a rawer texture and each book would look slightly different. We think that it is the best way to present the flaw beauty of Yu Man Square.
