Haworthia cooperi, commonly known as Dew Drop or Star Cactus, belongs to the Asphodelaceae family (formerly Liliaceae), in the Haworthia genus. These succulents are exquisite and petite, with a wide variety of types. Their leaves are crystal clear, displaying captivating color variations, making them exceptionally charming. They have become one of the most popular small succulent varieties in recent years, with numerous horticultural cultivars. | Light | Native to South Africa, Dew Drops prefer a cool, semi-shaded environment. Their primary growing seasons are spring and autumn, classifying them as "intermediate" succulents. They are drought-tolerant but not cold-hardy. Avoid high temperatures, humidity, intense direct sunlight, deep shade, and waterlogged soil. During their growth period, they require ample light. Excessive shade can lead to a loose, sprawling growth habit, elongated leaves, and reduced "window" translucency. In spring, autumn, and winter, place them on a south-facing balcony to enjoy the sun. In summer, avoid direct sun exposure; bright, indirect light, such as in a room where sunlight enters but doesn't directly hit the plant, is ideal. | Loose Soil | The soil should be loose, fertile, well-draining, breathable, and contain lime with coarser particles. A common mix involves 2 parts leaf mold and 3 parts coarse sand or perlite, with a small amount of bone meal or other calcareous materials added. | Fertilizing and Watering | Dew Drops have low nutrient requirements and can grow well without fertilization. However, during their peak growing season, applying a diluted organic fertilizer every two weeks can encourage lush growth and a full pot. Generally, watering once a week is sufficient, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. | Temperature | Ideally, maintain a temperature between 15-23°C for optimal growth. During winter, it's crucial to ensure warmth, keeping the temperature above 5°C to help the plant safely navigate the cold season and prevent frost damage. | Propagation | The primary methods for propagating Dew Drops are leaf cuttings and offsets. Similar to Echeverias, detached leaves or offsets can be allowed to dry at the wound site before planting in soil after 1-2 weeks.
