He possesses an extensive collection and used to host nostalgic toy and stationery exhibitions in Hong Kong shopping malls. However, these exhibitions were always short-lived, and I regrettably missed the chance to visit. Fortunately, he now has a permanent display area, a treat for our eyes. The artwork depicts this very display area. The collectibles housed within hold the stories of Hong Kong's stationery shops. As I painted, I pondered: "What stories unfold here? What have these exhibits witnessed?" In conversation with Joel, the scene of a "local craftsman" version of himself, the shopkeeper, and a child emerged. *** I cherish Hong Kong's small shops because owners remember their customers' preferences, offer space for casual chats, and their personalities shine through. Most of these artworks were created on-site at the small shops, capturing the subtle interactions between shopkeepers and customers as they unfolded.
