Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**. **「Shuifei Sand」** **True red, with a slight orange undertone. Its surface has a warm, matte luster that will become more lustrous with wear, developing a patina.** The production method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing with water, and collecting the "turbid liquid" from the upper layer after settling. This is then left to precipitate again (the Shuifei purification method). The cinnabar mud at the bottom is air-dried and then pressed using traditional methods. Its cross-section reveals evenly distributed fine mineral flecks. **「Emperor Sand」** **A brighter, true red color with higher hardness.** The production method involves multiple stages of purification from natural cinnabar ore, including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/Shuifei/high polishing**, followed by traditional pressing. Emperor Sand has almost no visible mineral flecks on the surface, but they are present internally. The surface is treated with a **high-polishing** process, giving it a metallic sheen, especially in sunlight, enhancing its metallic feel. **「Zijing Sand」** **A purplish-red color with slightly lower hardness than Emperor Sand.** The production method involves multiple stages from natural cinnabar ore, including **crushing/grinding/screening**, but **without the Shuifei purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as refined and features scattered small mineral flecks, creating a "starry sky" effect. **「Crystal Sand」** **A purplish-red color that is translucent.** These are large cinnabar particles directly chipped from cinnabar ore. "丹" is an ideogram: ancient miners would dig wells, and from these wells, they extracted minerals. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying the extraction of something from a dug mine. This "something" was cinnabar. Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dān shā) became known as cinnabar. "丹" and "朱" describe the color, and "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregular granular minerals. Cinnabar's color is famously enduring. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dān qīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is also a key component of "八宝印泥" (bā bǎo yìn ní), or the Eight Treasure Seal Paste. From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that have absorbed the essence of the sun and moon. You can use the following methods for authentication:** >. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat it indirectly. It is generally not recommended to directly burn finished products as controlling the time and area is difficult. If it turns black after prolonged heating, it cannot be restored.) >.
