Knots and cracks. A bread plate that intentionally embraces natural forms. Size: Φ193mm x Height approx. 18mm Wood types: Toch (Japanese Horse Chestnut), Oak Finish: Glass coating (Nano Crystal) When cutting trees that have grown in the forest and preparing them for use as material, lumbering is necessary. However, as each tree is unique, not all of them can be perfectly utilized as material. Many pieces have knots, insect damage, cracks, or chips, making them difficult to work with. While some of these woods may become firewood or be finely crushed into chips, most are currently discarded without being used. The utilization of wood scraps is a challenging issue, and it's not something a small workshop like ours can easily solve, but we are constantly experimenting to find ways to make the most of these remnants. The plate we are introducing is crafted by shaving wood from a combination of Toch (Japanese Horse Chestnut) with knots and White Oak. The Toch features knots and cracks, creating an interesting grain that allows the plate itself to be enjoyed as a piece of art. Its size is just right for a slice of toast, making it a convenient medium-sized plate. It would also look lovely holding a croissant and a side salad. It’s also delightful for arranging appetizers like cheese and cured meats, or for presenting baked goods. You could even beautifully display a single Japanese sweet, showcasing the plate's natural pattern. We invite you to pair it with various items and enjoy the natural wood grain. Some may feel hesitant about using plates with cracks or chips, but with proper care instructions, they are very easy to handle. Finished with a glass coating, you can place food directly onto the plate for use as tableware. It can be washed with water. Please do not use it in a microwave or dishwasher. After use, rinse it briefly, wipe off moisture, and allow it to dry; do not leave it soaking in water. We include care instructions with each plate.
