▰▰▰▰▰▰DETAIL▰▰▰▰▰▰
The term "Nunome Zogan" (布目象嵌), as the name suggests, refers to the technique of meticulously carving dense, cross-hatched textures onto a soft iron base, resembling the woven fibers of fabric. Then, thin sheets of 24K pure gold and sterling silver patterns are hammered and inlaid onto this textured surface, hence its name.
The fabric-like texture on this piece is remarkably clear. It’s truly hard to imagine that this was entirely handcrafted by Japanese artisans; this is the marvel of traditional craftsmanship!
▰▰▰▰▰▰AMITA▰▰▰▰▰▰
Founded in Kobe in 1932, Amita was re-established in Kyoto in 1946 as the Amita Damascene factory after World War II. In 1952, the Japanese government officially designated Amita Damascene Co., Ltd. as an export retailer (duty-free shop), producing many items for export to the West. This allowed the curator to acquire some Japanese pieces from Western collections.
Metal inlay craftsmanship can be traced back over 2000 years to Damascus, the capital of Syria. It was later introduced to the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century with the Moorish invasions. Around the same time, it also found its way to Japan via the Silk Road.
The process involves using iron or copper alloy as the base material, carving fine lines onto its surface, and then hammering thin sheets of real gold and silver, fashioned into patterns, into these lines. Lacquer is then applied and fired to prevent oxidation and rust of the base metal. Following this, the piece is polished, meticulously engraved with fine techniques, and finally set into jewelry.
