A Glimpse of Memory My fondness for walnut shortbreads began with Grandma. It was her favorite snack, a memory etched in time. A small neighborhood store sold them in packs of six for 40 NT dollars. She would carefully take out a folded, worn 50 NT dollar bill from her coin purse. I'd eagerly volunteer to buy them for her, because the change could get me a pack of Doublemint gum. Grandma's purse was old and small, its patterns barely discernible. It carried a faint scent of Vicks VapoRub and menthol balm, much like the aroma of her clothes. Walnut shortbreads were Grandma's favorite. I like to think I was hers too.
