Song of the Birds Series: Hand-painted Red Bird Plate

How did such a unique little bird come to be? Even I'm not quite sure. That's because I always work spontaneously. I never sketch out ideas or create preliminary drawings beforehand. If I were to sketch first, it would feel like I was just following a blueprint, which I find incredibly dull and uninspiring. Most importantly, it wouldn't allow for the spontaneity and excitement that comes from a sudden spark of inspiration. Instead, I begin with just a vague notion in my mind – perhaps an idea to paint a bird this time, or flowers. Then, facing the blank plate with nothing but that initial concept, I focus. It's as if all sorts of things emerge on their own. I then select and refine these elements based on whether they feel right or interesting. That's why I never know exactly what will appear. I don't dwell on the outcome. I find joy in the dynamism, the new discoveries, the surprises, and the serendipitous encounters that emerge from this process. You might also notice slight imperfections such as pinholes (tiny glaze voids) or minor glaze chips, which are normal for earthenware. We hope you'll embrace these as unique characteristics that contribute to the charm of "tsuchimono." This inherent imperfection, a kind of untamed beauty, is the true allure of earthenware. Because it's earthenware, the actual piece may feel more rustic than you'd expect from the images. However, this initial impression quickly fades as the plate settles in, and you'll find yourself growing to appreciate its genuine quality, texture, and rustic charm.
