In 1957, his Butterfly Chair received the prestigious Golden Compass award at the Milan Triennale. Yanagi believed that the hands convey the warmth and ideas behind a product more effectively. By feeling with one's hands, one finds the answers. Each piece is meticulously calculated and adjusted by hand, with needs and function considered paramount before shaping the design. If there is one contemporary Japanese design master who is most admired and representative, it is undoubtedly Sori Yanagi.
