Born into a firefighter family in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), he became a student of the master Ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Toyohiro in 1811. His 55-print landscape series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō," created between 1833 and 1834, established his reputation as one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists of all time. Due to high demand for his landscape prints, mass production sometimes affected the quality of his scenic works. He created over 5,000 paintings and produced 10,000 copies from some of his woodblock prints. His talent was first recognized by Western Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters, and he was also influenced by them. Hiroshige's style is characterized by its accessibility and delicate charm, making him a household name in Japan during his time.
