The reason for the existence of paper
At the beginning of each year, the editorial department will set the main focus of the year based on trends.
There are often heated debates in the process, and more often than not, it is the sudden inspiration of social resonance. What the editor needs to do is to sense the pulse of the world, formulate propositions for it, and then follow the naturally growing content to find the direction to answer the question. The theme of 2024 is exactly this. We observed the restless heartbeat of the collective in Taiwan and Japan, but also found that this "uncertainty" is an opportunity to drive people to "discuss" and "think".
This is the era of Asia. The cultures of Taiwan, Japan, and Korea over the years have finally converged under the retro trend such as Y2K. You can’t immediately tell whose original work it belongs to, because cultures have no boundaries and influence each other, forming a unique Asian shape.
This is an era when young people understand better, not just about their physical age, but also about their mental state, if they can always remain curious, they will be strong. Using the latest vocabulary, the latest AI technology, and the most unexpected cross-border cooperation, it is young people who are creating new things.
This is the era of issues. Thanks to social platforms, gender, physical and mental growth, self-identity, and the collective nature of small groups who can speak out create social attention. Even if society has not yet changed, it is enough for people in it to find companions. Recognize "I am not alone".
The editor’s experience leads us to the 20th generation of Taiwanese and Japanese young people. We decided to use a young perspective to think about the five major questions of "freedom", "relationship", "growth", "sex" and "AI", and interviewed tattooists, illustrators, hip-hop singers and program engineers who were in their prime. , talk about yourself and your feelings about the issues. I thought it would be a pessimistic summary of the future, but in the end I got a feeling like waiting for the dawn on the eve of dawn. We (or they) in the 20s, like all adults, don’t know whether it will be sunny or rainy tomorrow, but we still look forward to it. "An interesting day" begins here.
After the epidemic, Japan has spawned many issue discussion platforms. This issue has exclusive interviews with the emerging business and culture magazine "tattva" and the multi-gender issues magazine "IWAKAN" to analyze first-hand how Japan's young and middle-aged generations use atypical paper to raise questions and express themselves through Magazines take over bookstores, creating slow but steady initiatives.
"Consciousness on the Internet is not eternal." - "IWAKAN" founder Tora Nakazato
"I'm more concerned about how the issue is recorded and preserved." - Yuta Hanai, editor-in-chief of "tattva"
"Saury" spent ten years working side by side with readers to find out the current issues, and it was also the readers' consciousness that jointly created the current appearance of Taiwanese and Japanese cultural journals. This year the editorial department will use a new attitude to bring the issues to everyone. I look forward to continuing to be a 20-year-old in the face of curiosity; in the era of issues, continue to use paper to create our appearance.

- The quarterly magazine "Saury" is Taiwan's first Japanese cultural chronicle written in Chinese. The content gathers life, art, design, history, technology... and other multi-faceted topics. Each issue focuses on a theme, from superficial to in-depth, and thorough. By interviewing and inviting Taiwanese and Japanese writers, we gather opinions from different perspectives to satisfy tourists who want to travel to Japan and office workers who appreciate Japanese art.
