The doors of time, always held within the heart; gather fragments of light to illuminate the soul. Windows, essential elements in a home for ventilation, shelter, and connecting different spaces, hold profound symbolism. Crafted from old windowpanes that have fulfilled their protective duty, these pieces are transformed through design and craftsmanship into practical vessels for daily life, continuing to safeguard the light within our hearts. Old glass is cleaned, cut, and polished. Then, through high-temperature firing and a carefully controlled cooling process, the fragility that may have resulted from the original manufacturing methods (such as overly rapid cooling) is overcome, restoring the glass's inherent resilience and strength. Precise temperature control ensures that the beautiful patterns remain intact as the glass is artfully curved. Glass is a fully recyclable material and a vessel of time and memory. A friend once brought us the windows from her childhood room during her old house's demolition, commissioning us to reimagine them. She wanted the "memories of the space she once inhabited" to continue accompanying her in her daily life. The transparency and refractive qualities of glass always capture the light within a space, creating shifting patterns of light and shadow, much like memories that evolve over time—sometimes vivid, sometimes hazy, always evocative. Thus, the name "Shí Guāng" (Gathering Light) was chosen. It not only highlights the characteristics of glass but also signifies gathering precious moments from life and cherishing recollections of times past. It also sounds like "time" itself. Since 2010, when we began creating and teaching glass art, we have consistently used old window glass as a primary material, employing it in kiln-bending techniques. We continue to promote this practice. Using glass from retired wooden windows, we craft tea scoops (which can also serve other purposes). The window frames are cut and polished to reveal their natural wood grain, creating holders. These are paired with tea needles made from 100% recyclable hand-forged brass, along with matching teapot rests and glass coasters in various shapes.
