The art of incense, known as Kōdō, originated in the Tang Dynasty and reached its zenith in the Song Dynasty. It was embraced by scholars and literati, adding an elegant ambiance to gatherings and artistic pursuits, offering a sensory experience that engages sight, smell, and spirit.
The aroma of Kōdō transcends mere sensory pleasure; it encompasses the appreciation of scents, the aesthetics of an incense ceremony, and ultimately, a profound sense of peace and tranquility.
Different types of incense offer unique aromas and methods of use, creating diverse olfactory landscapes for each ceremony and unfolding distinct aesthetic experiences.
Common forms of appreciating agarwood include incense sticks, coils, burners, and incense seals.
Incense seals, also known as incense stamps or imprints, were initially used in temples for timing. They are specialized molds, shaped like seal script, used to hold incense powder.
During the process of creating an incense seal, incense powder is carefully spooned into the mold and pressed to form desired seal script patterns or designs.
Once lit, the incense burns slowly along the imprinted lines, allowing you to savor the noble fragrance of agarwood while observing the silent combustion of the powder you mindfully pressed.
