Roman glass is glass unearthed from items used in daily life by people of the Roman Empire, buried underground for 1,200 to 1,700 years (approximately the 1st to 5th centuries CE, primarily in regions corresponding to modern-day Afghanistan and Iran). Over time, silica and aluminum oxide within the glass reacted with iron, copper, and magnesium in the soil, a phenomenon known as "silvery iridescence" or "glass iridescence."
This beautiful, iridescent effect, characterized by overlapping layers that shimmer with rainbow hues, occurs under a unique combination of environmental conditions.
This particular piece of Roman glass features a base color of peacock green, highlighted by delicate and beautiful silvery iridescence in shades of pink, green, and opal, radiating a stunning spectrum of colors.
We have designed this piece into a simple necklace, utilizing the cylindrical shape of the glass and threading it onto a K18 chain to showcase the beauty of the material.
The front and back present different expressions, allowing for enjoyment in its reversible design.
Awakened from a long slumber of antiquity, this Roman glass seems to whisper stories as you gaze upon it.
Size: Roman Glass: 23×7×4mm
K18 Chain Length: 45cm (adjustable with a clasp)
Metal Material: K18 (stamped)
*The surface of glass buried for over 500 years exhibits a glittering silvery sheen. This is a natural phenomenon caused by weathering, not artificial alteration.
*Please handle with care, as scratching with fingers or other objects may cause the iridescence to flake off.
Each piece is unique, with no two being alike. We invite you to enjoy this Roman glass, a crystallization of ancient romance, a beautiful trace woven from human creation and the effects of natural weathering.
