In 1801, British scholar Thomas Young first studied human perception of color, proposing that by selecting three primary light colors with significant separation and combining them in different proportions, almost any color could be produced. Turner infused his landscape paintings with personal interpretation, making the depiction of light, atmosphere, and water his specialty. This unique approach to landscape profoundly influenced Claude Monet, the "father of Impressionism," inspiring his seminal work "Impression, Sunrise." Turner's art not only redefined landscape painting but also laid a crucial foundation for the development of Post-Impressionism. --------- Turner's talent was recognized early in the art world, granting him the financial freedom to express his unique style. In "A History of Art in Pictures," David Piper described his later works as "enigmatic mysteries." Critic John Ruskin characterized him as someone who "seized the pulse of nature with thrilling accuracy." Turner favored depicting natural phenomena and disasters: fires, shipwrecks, sunlight, storms, heavy rain, and fog. He was captivated by the power of the sea. While he included figures, they served only to accentuate the sublime and wild grandeur of nature, which could not be conquered by humans, and to demonstrate divine power. Consequently, his later works focused on the play of light on water, the sky, and flames, gradually moving away from literal representation and paving the way for Impressionist theory. His early works employed more traditional techniques. However, in his later period, he integrated watercolor techniques into his oil painting, capturing the ephemeral effects of light and atmosphere. It is said he once had himself tied to the mast of a ship in a storm to experience the tempest firsthand. In his later years, he made his oil paintings more transparent, using thin layers of color to express pure light effects. In "Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway," the outlines of objects are almost indistinguishable. The intense tones and fleeting light and shadow established Turner as a leading British artist and greatly influenced later French Impressionist painters, particularly Monet, who studied his techniques quite closely.
