Inspired by traditional patterns from Latvia, a Nordic country, these mittens have been crafted into a charming, floral-like design. The yarn used is 100% Shetland wool, imported directly from the Shetland Islands. While not as soft as Merino wool, it is pleasantly non-itchy and remarkably lightweight due to its excellent air-trapping qualities. With continued use, the fibers will naturally felt together, developing a rich, characteristic texture over time. Upon shipping, the mittens are pre-washed to enhance this soft, felted feel. This challenging upbringing results in wool fibers that are longer, with a mix of thicker, finer, and shorter coarser hairs, as well as more colored fibers. This unique composition yields exceptionally strong wool. Furthermore, wool is characterized by a natural crimp, the waviness of its fibers, which varies by breed. British wool, including Shetland, is distinguished by a dense and abundant crimp compared to ordinary sheep wool. A higher degree of crimp contributes to yarn that is springy, elastic, and voluminous. This inherent bulkiness allows the yarn to trap air effectively, making it highly insulating, warm, and lightweight. Most importantly, this strong wool is exceptionally durable.
