In recent decades, extensive land development has led to habitat loss and a decline in their numbers. In 1989, under Taiwan's Wildlife Conservation Act, the Formosan Black Bear was classified as endangered. In 2001, it was chosen as Taiwan's most representative wild animal. Known for its round head, short neck, small eyes, and a long, dog-like snout (leading to the common nickname "dog bear"), the Formosan Black Bear does not hibernate.
