Spanish Damascene craftsmanship pendants from Albania, personally curated and repurposed by the curator to breathe new life into antique jewelry. **While the metal-inlaid block is antique, all other elements have been repurposed by the curator using modern materials.** ▰▰▰▰▰▰Damascene▰▰▰▰▰▰ Spanish Damascene craftsmanship, a metal inlay technique, traces its origins back over 2000 years to Damascus, the capital of Syria. It later arrived on the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century with the Moorish invasions, while also spreading to Japan via the Silk Road during the same period. The Moors, originally Arabs from Asia and North Africa, were followers of Islam and were collectively known as "los moros" or "los musulmanes." They ruled over most of Spain for over 300 years after their invasion. Even after being driven out of central Spain, they maintained prosperity in the Andalusia region of southern Iberia for more than three centuries. After nearly 8 centuries of rule, they were finally expelled in 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, marking the unification of the country. Although the Arab kingdom had fallen, it profoundly influenced Spanish culture in various aspects, leaving behind a wealth of precious heritage. The technique involves creating a base from iron or a copper alloy, etching fine lines onto its surface, and then meticulously hammering thin sheets of real gold and silver into these lines to form patterns.
