Their ears are cropped, enabling them to move without hindrance through dense, thorny undergrowth... They are unparalleled in tracking and pursuing deer, never failing their quarry." Once known as the Takasago dog or Taiwanese native dog, the Formosan Mountain Dog is a descendant of South Asian hunting hounds. Known for its agility and adaptability to Taiwan's varied terrain, it was first utilized by indigenous peoples as a hunting companion. Due to a lack of early dog breeding concepts in Taiwan, coupled with periods of foreign colonial rule, imported breeds interbred with the native Formosan Mountain Dog, gradually diluting its genetic distinctiveness. This once iconic Taiwanese breed consequently faded from the historical stage. In the 1980s, a joint Taiwanese-Japanese academic team conducted an extensive survey in the mountainous regions, eventually tracing several Grade-1 purebred Formosan Mountain Dogs, leading to their successful revival.
