Leather produced through chrome tanning is softer than vegetable-tanned leather and exhibits less fading, discoloration, and shrinkage. This technique is known as chrome tanning. Leather made using this method is simply referred to as 'chrome-tanned cowhide.' Currently, chrome-tanned cowhide accounts for approximately 95% of the global cowhide production for leather goods. Most commercially available leather bags, sofas, and accessories are made from chrome-tanned cowhide. The reason for its widespread use is its softer texture, which facilitates the production of various leather items. Leather is merely a byproduct of the livestock industry. Consequently, farmers do not prioritize protecting the cattle's skin. During their lives, cattle may be subjected to insect bites, scratches, and punctures. Free-roaming cattle may also bear brands, and as they grow, their skin develops natural lines and wrinkles. In cases of difficult births, there might be surgical scars from C-sections. During the process of slaughtering for meat, knife marks from skinning can also occur. These marks are faithfully present on the leather when it is processed, serving as a testament to the animal's life journey. They often opt for factories to sand and then spray-coat the leather surface, resulting in a clean appearance but lacking a natural character. At DOZI Handmade Leather, unless the natural marks on the leather are excessively large, we do not specifically avoid using them during production. As the user handles the item over time, the leather darkens and develops a rich sheen. Please contact customer service to inquire about production times before selecting this service. 🌞 Care and Maintenance -------------------- Frequent use is the best form of maintenance. It is advisable to avoid storing leather in humid environments. If the leather accidentally gets wet, wipe it immediately with a dry cloth and allow it to air dry in a cool, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can cause the leather to harden and deteriorate. Once dry, you can apply leather conditioner to replenish the leather's oils and moisture. You can also spray a waterproofing agent onto the surface to protect against accidental spills and enhance surface protection. If the leather item needs to be stored or will not be used for an extended period, place it in an electronic dehumidifier cabinet, maintaining humidity levels between 50% and 60% to prevent mold. Alternatively, a sealed bag with a desiccant pack can achieve a similar effect. Cowhide is not excessively ground or coated with heavy surface treatments. Therefore, slight color variations, grain patterns, and minor scratches may be present. If you require a perfectly flawless leather surface, it may be difficult to accommodate your request, and we cannot accept requests for "flawless leather." Additionally, once an item has been personalized with engraving or laser carving, returns will not be accepted unless there was a production error.
