They have a small skull and a short, broad snout. They are endemic to the northern Gulf of California and are the world's most endangered cetacean species. Vaquitas are never hunted directly but are frequently caught in gillnets set for totoaba fish. Additionally, their numbers have declined due to chlorinated pesticides, reduced water flow in the Colorado River for irrigation, and inbreeding.
