The Taiwan Blue Magpie (Urocissa caerulea) is a passerine bird of the Corvidae family, endemic to Taiwan. The scientific name *Urocissa* means "magpie with a long tail," while *caerulea* signifies "azure." It was introduced by the British naturalist and diplomat Robert Swinhoe around 1862, named by John Gould, and officially began its academic study. According to historical records from the Qing Dynasty, local inhabitants of Taiwan at the time referred to this species as "Long-tailed Mountain Maiden" or "Long-tailed Array." In the *History of Taiwan* compiled by Lin Yu-tang, it is described as: "With emerald wings and a vermilion beak, its splendor shines brightly." In the shared flood myths of many indigenous Taiwanese tribes, the Taiwan Blue Magpie is revered as a sacred bird for sacrificing itself to bring back fire and save its people from starvation and near extinction.
