**My happiness is not yours, and my sorrow is not yours.**
Are emotions innate or learned? Are they simple bodily responses or complex cognitive processes? This book, with philosophical research as its backbone and the latest findings from empirical sciences like psychology, neuroscience, and sociology as evidence, supplemented by Eastern and Western works of art and literature, discusses the embodied and rational aspects of emotion, and how they influence each other between genes and environment. We can now seek the essence of emotion through a richer and more diverse lens.

**Endorsements**
"The Sentiments Within" is a rare, perhaps even unique, excellent Chinese book exploring emotion. Muk-yan uses numerous examples from literature, history, film, and music, not only to enhance reader engagement but also to showcase his extensive knowledge. As readers delve into each chapter, they will find their understanding of human emotions deepening, ultimately revealing a grander picture. If you have no prior research in emotions and wish to gain a better understanding, this book will not disappoint.
-- Wang Wai-hung, Professor of Philosophy, California State University, Chico
Reading this book feels like taking a class to re-understand myself and those around me. We also suddenly realize that the different emotions people display, beyond biological instinct, also contain rational components and socio-cultural functions. A good academic work addresses questions that people have only a partial understanding of, points out the underlying principles, and thus provides a more systematic understanding of the issue. "The Sentiments Within" fulfills this role perfectly.
-- Ernest H. C. Kao, Professor and Head of the Department of Social Science, Hang Seng University of Hong Kong
It is a pleasure that Muk-yan has finally completed "The Sentiments Within," and I particularly feel the deep care for life conveyed in the book. Muk-yan, specializing in the philosophy of emotion, incorporates perspectives from psychology, sociology, and anthropology to dissect emotions. His vision is remarkably broad and practical. The exploration of various emotions in the book helps readers understand emotions, allowing us to reflect inwardly and compare them with our own emotional dimensions.
