So, what exactly is sawmilling?** In fact, a sawmill operator is different from a carpenter. When we often hear about carpenters, they create various handicrafts from wood. However, in the previous process, a sawmill operator works on transforming a tree into different shapes and thicknesses of wood🪚. The operator first uses a belt saw to cut the tree into the appropriate thickness and then uses a power saw to cut it into suitable sizes. Finally, the wood is smoothed through sanding. More about Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber Located in Ma Tso Lung, Sheung Shui, Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber has been in operation since 1947, making it the only remaining wood processing factory in Hong Kong. Prior to 1997, the sawmilling industry flourished in Hong Kong due to the importation of a large quantity of tropical rainforest timber from British colonies in North Borneo and Malaysia. However, after 1997, the supply of raw timber significantly decreased, coupled with reduced demand. Chi Kee transformed its business to focus on processing locally sourced reclaimed wood, and sawmilling became a declining industry in Hong Kong. Over the course of 75 years, Chi Kee has experienced four relocations. However, due to government land acquisition for the North East New Territories New Development Areas Planning in 2022, the sawmill could not escape its fate of being demolished.
