We often get asked, "How is 《freehand embroidery》 different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery involves a machine reading an embroidery design and stitching it automatically. This results in perfectly uniform and identical embroidery every time. In contrast, 《freehand embroidery》 is a craft where an artisan manually moves the fabric while stitching the design. Because it's made by human hands, each piece has its own unique character. No two embroidered pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand-embroidery. The process involves transferring a sketch onto the fabric and then, while referencing the original artwork, stitching in sync with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – a truly amazing craftsmanship that's incredible just to imagine. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Of these, only about 50 are able to do it professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, a mere 10 individuals possess the skill to execute Pangandaran's intricate designs, which are known for their difficulty. However, being skilled alone isn't enough; embroidery requires a keen sense of aesthetics. Even a slight nuance can significantly alter the overall impression. For this reason, we entrust our work to Hun, who possesses the highest level of skill. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been embroidering since he was 15, making him a veteran of 31 years in this field. Moreover, he has an exceptional sense of design. We place our complete trust in him. Due to recent economic development, traditional crafts in Vietnam, like elsewhere, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining, and there are virtually no young people today who can perform this technique. It is anticipated that the number of artisans will continue to decrease, and Vietnam's freehand embroidery is destined to become a flickering flame within the next decade or so.
