Inspired by the daily attire of soldiers stationed in these Arctic bases, the M48 PARKA was developed and designed in 1948, marking the first use of the fishtail hem. However, the M48's design proved too complex for mass production. In 1951, the US military issued new M51 uniforms, which included the four-pocket "M51 FIELD JACKET," "M51 TROUSERS," and our featured item, the "M51 PARKA" fishtail parka. Early issued "M51 PARKA" garments were made from pure cotton twill fabric, featuring an internal insulated liner for excellent warmth. Its most distinctive features were its oversized silhouette and the fishtail design at the back. The so-called fishtail design involved a split at the rear hem, longer than the front, resembling a fish's tail, and was also known as a "fishtail coat." The fishtail design was not merely for aesthetics at the time. In areas with deep snow, the split hem's drawstring could be secured to the legs, conserving body heat while allowing ample freedom of movement. Even when sitting on snow, soldiers could button up the coat to block snow ingress, ensuring only the outer hem of the coat got wet, while their fitted trousers remained dry, minimizing the impact of the cold. This was a unique and human-centric design. RED TORNADO's custom-developed pure cotton sateen fabric offers high density and a substantial weight of 317g, providing a degree of wind and water resistance. With a thickened cowhide leather patch and pure cotton drawstrings, the materials are exceptionally durable. The manufacturing process for this item is intricate, resulting in extremely high production waste.
