**A New Concept for 108-Bead Bracelets**
Traditionally, 108-bead bracelets were exclusively for Buddhist practitioners, but that view is rather outdated:p.
While 108-bead bracelets do originate from Buddhist scriptures and their length often allows for multiple wraps around the wrist or wear as a necklace, their materials, designs, and decorative applications have evolved with the times. Today, they are more fashionable, multi-layered, and versatile. Designers must also adapt to user preferences to create unique, customized pieces.
Furthermore, **108 has never been exclusive to Buddhists. Even non-Buddhists can appreciate the auspicious meaning of 108 and its potential for layered styling.**
We often share with our clients that a 108-bead bracelet is an external object. Whether we are Buddhist or not, chanting mantras or praying is primarily an inner practice. It's about **not being attached to or hindered by material possessions**, and certainly not being confined by the material, number of beads, or how one holds the bracelet on the left or right hand.
It is best to use prayer beads for convenience and freedom. As the "Diamond Sutra" states: "All phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, shadows, like dew or lightning; thus they should be contemplated." Bracelets and prayer beads are also phenomena, so one should not be overly concerned with them when using them. **Comfort is key.**
**The Origin of 108 Prayer Beads**
The 108 beads represent 108 types of afflictions. Within the six senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and mind, there are three feelings each: pleasure, pain, and indifference, totaling 18. Within the six senses, there are also aspects of good, bad, and neutral, making 36. Finally, adding the past, present, and future transcends time.
The 108 afflictions signify the 108 kinds of worldly troubles that sentient beings experience. These afflictions give rise to various negative karma, which must be severed. By eliminating these 108 afflictions, the mind and body can achieve a state of tranquility. Wearing prayer beads serves as a constant reminder to emulate the compassion of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, maintaining a calm, unhurried, and spacious mindset in any environment.
In Tibetan, prayer beads are called "chang wa," which means to remember, think of, or recall. It also signifies continuity. It represents the constant remembrance of gurus, yidams, dakinis, and dharma protectors; it also implies that gurus, yidams, dakinis, and dharma protectors constantly remember us, bestowing siddhis and wisdom.
**Turquoise**
Turquoise (Turquoise), with colors ranging from blue, green, to light green, light yellow, and white, is one of the oldest gemstones. Since ancient Egypt, Mexico, and Persia, it has been regarded as a mystical and protective object. Ancient rulers used turquoise to display their divine authority, political power, and wealth.
Externally, the black veins on the surface of turquoise are called "iron lines," formed by the oxidation of iron elements within the stone. Therefore, each iron line is a unique gift from nature.
Furthermore, turquoise is graded based on its "vitrification" level. The higher the degree of vitrification, the fewer iron lines, the denser the structure, and the rarer the output.
**Agate**
Agate (Agate), also known as "jade," is primarily composed of silica from volcanic eruptions. It is a relatively abundant gemstone in the Earth's crust, making it one of the oldest gemstones in history.
After volcanic eruptions, silica melts in nature enter the pores of volcanic lava or other rock fissures, depositing layer by layer to form what is known as "banded agate" (finely banded ones are even called "silk agate"). Those with dot-like distributions resemble snowflakes and are popularly known as "cherry blossom agate."
Agate is composed of various colors (mineral colors) and may form in concentric circles, wavy patterns, layers, or parallel bands, hence the saying "a thousand kinds of agate, ten thousand kinds of jade."
Agate symbolizes stable energy, calming emotions, soothing anxiety, enhancing vitality and energy, strengthening personal aura and magnetic field, attracting positive energy and good luck, improving fortune, and further enhancing creativity and inspiration, leading to an abundance of ideas during the creative process.
Due to its wide color spectrum, agate can correspond to the seven chakras of the human body, making it a precious and beautiful gem with both historical value and functionality.
**Thumb Ring (Ring)**
The origin of the ring can be traced back to the thumb ring.
Thumb rings, also known as "ban zhi," "ban zhi," or "bang zhi," were protective gear worn on the thumb by ancient archers, typically made of leather or animal bone in a tube shape, to prevent the arrow shaft from injuring the thumb. After the Manchu Qing dynasty, this tubular protective gear evolved into decorative items made from precious materials like gold, silver, jade, agate, emerald, and ivory. They symbolized power and status.
Traditional thumb rings were classified as "civil" or "military" based on their size and thickness. Military thumb rings were generally simple and plain, while civil thumb rings often featured poetry or patterns on their outer surfaces. Thumb rings made of precious materials were exclusively for royalty and nobility. Commoners typically wore thumb rings made of Hetian jade, ivory, or porcelain.
In ancient times, the distinction in thumb ring materials became a marker of social status, carrying a sense of caution, thus evolving into what we now call rings.
**Obsidian**
Obsidian (Obsidian) has been revered since ancient times as a gemstone with a powerful aura, capable of warding off evil and dispelling negative energy.
Ice-type obsidian, originating from volcanic rock formations in frigid regions from ancient glacial periods, is considered top-grade for purifying environments and auras, representing the highest quality among obsidian gemstones.
Obsidian is regarded as the best amulet and protective charm, helping to eliminate illness and turbidity from the body, relieve fatigue, and restore physical strength quickly.
Obsidian is bold and confident, enhancing one's leadership charisma and aiding in career advancement, hence its name, the "leader's stone."
**Peace Buckle**
Since the Shang and Zhou dynasties, Chinese people have attached buttons to the clothing of newborns and young children, praying for their safe growth. Later, buttons evolved into items made of various materials, but they retained the meaning of wishing for peace, thus gradually being called "peace buckles."
In terms of appearance, the peace buckle has an inner and outer circle. The outer circle symbolizes the vastness of the universe, while the inner circle symbolizes our inner peace and tranquility, carrying the meaning of wishing for peace and happiness.
Additionally, peace buckle ornaments resemble ancient coins, so peace buckles are sometimes called ancient coins, and ancient coins are also sometimes called peace buckles.
**Six-Syllable Mantra**
The Six-Syllable Mantra (Om Mani Padme Hum) originates from Sanskrit and is composed of six Tibetan syllables: ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུྃ (Sanskrit: Oṃ Maṇi Padme Hūṃ; Tibetan: ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུྃ). It is the most common mantra in Buddhism.
Each syllable of Om Mani Padme Hum carries a different meaning:
"Om" is a combination of the three sounds "A," "U," and "Ma," symbolizing our body, speech, and mind. Primarily, it refers to the mind. When the mind is controlled by afflictions, one is called a "samsaric being." One who counteracts and severs afflictions is called "liberated." The meaning of "A," "U," and "Ma" is: when the mind is controlled by afflictions, one is called a "samsaric being"; if afflictions can be severed from the mind, one is called "liberated." At this point, if supported by bodhicitta, one is called a "Holy Bodhisattva."
Transforming impure body, speech, and mind into pure body, speech, and mind through the path of practice is the meaning of "Mani" and "Padme." "Mani" refers to bodhicitta, and "Padme" refers to the correct view of emptiness and dependent origination.
"Hum" signifies the union of these two, where wisdom is supported by skillful means, and skillful means are supported by wisdom.
In essence, by practicing bodhicitta and the view of emptiness, one can ultimately transform impure body, speech, and mind into the body, speech, and mind of a Buddha. Thus, it is said: "Om Mani Padme Hum."

**◈ Regarding Use and Collection**
1. Natural gemstones possess natural luster and unique textures (tiny black spots, stone lines, ice cracks, cloudy inclusions, mineral deficiencies, asymmetry, and other natural details). By wearing them frequently, you will observe subtle color changes that typically make them appear more translucent and enchanting, which is also the best method of care.
Natural organic gemstones (such as coral and amber) have low hardness and are not resistant to acids and alkalis. When encountering dirt, do not use cleaning agents. Rinse with clean water and wipe with a soft cloth. You can also use a soft brush dipped in a small amount of mineral oil (such as baby oil) for gentle polishing and maintenance.
2. Metal jewelry has a very long lifespan, provided it is protected from external damage or strong acids and alkalis that could cause fading.
3. Fabric materials (ribbon, cotton, gauze) are soft and comfortable to the touch and have a long lifespan, provided they are kept away from high temperatures, external damage, or strong acids and alkalis that could cause fading.
4. For jewelry of any material, when dirty, it is advisable to wipe it with a soft cloth dampened with clean water as appropriate, or use a moderate amount of neutral detergent for suitable materials. After washing, ensure it is kept dry as soon as possible.
5. When jewelry is removed, it should be carefully packaged and stored to minimize exposure to air and slow down oxidation and discoloration. Avoid stacking or placing heavy objects on it.
