Made by a Japanese resident in Vietnam. https://youtu.be/To9853__kGY The Fading Art of 《Freehand Embroidery》 Most of the embroidery at Pangandaran is done using 《freehand embroidery》. We are often asked, "How is freehand embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery reads an embroidery pattern and stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical designs. In contrast, 《freehand embroidery》 is a craft where the artisan manually moves the fabric while stitching the design. Because it's made by human hands, each piece has its own unique character. No two embroidered pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand embroidery. It's an incredible artisan skill that involves transferring an outline to the fabric and stitching while referring to the original artwork, coordinating with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – just imagining it is impressive. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Among them, only about 50 work professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest embroidery certification level, Level 4. Of these, only 10 can execute the intricate Pangandaran embroidery, which is known for its difficulty. However, being skilled isn't enough; embroidery requires a sense of style. Even a slight nuance can significantly alter the overall impression. For this reason, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Hun, who possesses the highest level of skill. Hun is currently 46 years old but has been embroidering since the age of 15, making him a veteran of 31 years in this field. Moreover, he has a truly exceptional sense of style. We place our complete trust in him. With recent economic development, Vietnam, like many other countries, faces challenges in preserving traditional crafts. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools, now skilled artisans teach apprentices. Hun has trained four people so far, but he notes that there are no young people capable of this craft nowadays. Due to rapid economic growth, manual labor is being left behind, and the number of artisans is expected to decrease further. This trend is accelerating faster than in Japan, and the national systems do not actively protect these crafts. As a result, Vietnam's freehand embroidery is on the verge of disappearing within the next decade or so. In this video, we had the esteemed artisan Hun create the 'Sudden Rain Embroidery'. Please witness the beautiful embroidery brought to life with his assured technique.
